2016 Top 100 Interior Giants Research: Firms and Fees

Flash back five years, when fees stood at $2.2 billion (remember, they are now at $3.5 billion). Since then, business on a pure dollar basis has expanded 59 percent—a heck of a run in any industry. Another interesting stat: Firms are getting more out of their designers than ever before, as fees per employee topped $300,000 for the first time, up 15 percent. (Staffers report that 80 percent of their time was billed to clients.) Sweet numbers, indeed.

Architecture firm VOA to be acquired

Architecture firm VOA to be acquired

Chicago architecture firm VOA Associates is in a deal to be acquired by a bigger Canadian firm. Edmonton, Alberta-based Stantec has a letter of intent to acquire the firm in a deal expected to close in late March, according to a statement this morning. Financial terms were not disclosed. VOA has 280 employees, with more than 140 in Chicago. Stantec has more than 15,000 employees, including a 50-person Chicago office.

IDEO sells minority stake and joins Japan’s kyu collective

Design giant IDEO has joined the kyu collective – a diverse group of creative businesses which is a strategic operating unit of Tokyo-based Hakuhodo DY Holdings. As part of the move, kyu is taking a minority stake in IDEO, but the consultancy will continue to be owned and independently managed by its partners.

International giant Gensler has opened a new outpost in Birmingham as part of longer-term plans to create a huge 200-strong office in the city. The office will become the headquarters for Gensler’s regional work and the company said that its ambitions were to grow the studio "to be as big as the London office, which is home to 200 people."
