Telemedicine has many positive effects on the transformation of healthcare. It brings medical services to the people—allowing them to manage chronic conditions, increase patient-physician engagement and receive in-home consultations.
Proactively Addressing Population Health While Improving Access to Care
In a 2017 report entitled “Strategic Partnerships for Tomorrow’s Health Care,” Sg2 highlights numerous case studies where health systems have engaged in nontraditional partnerships to achieve objectives – including fostering growth and improving performance.

Problem Solving + Passion Fuel Healthcare Design
We all have a healthcare experience. Sometimes it’s a joyous occasion, like when James Beukema stood by his wife’s side as they welcomed their baby girl into the world. Other times, it’s as a patient. And frequently, it’s to support a loved one as Ryan Ramos experienced when his mother was hospitalized with Alzheimer’s.Beukema and Ramos are two of the millions of people every year who end up spending time in a healthcare environment. They also happen to be part of a team designing spacial solutions for Steelcase Health.
Three Major Firms Collaborate on Massive Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago
The concept behind the project is known as translational medicine, which centers on physicians, therapists, and research scientists working with patients in an open setting called an ability lab.
3 Things to Know About the State of the Healthcare Industry
Faced with significant reimbursement pressures, renewed competition across extended markets and payer demands for cost-effective care delivery options, providers are focused on developing new facilities that support high-quality coordinated care in the lowest-cost setting.
The Power of Influence: Patients as Consumers
For the last two decades, healthcare has been transitioning to a consumer-driven model. The vision is one to which we can all relate, similar to that of a business or retail model, where patients as consumers can choose the best provider based on a myriad of options, including type of care offered, care quality, and price. It’s utilizing the idea of choice to drive demand. It’s not novel in other business sectors; it’s what makes the business model work – creating customer satisfaction, driving revenue, product and experience differentiation, as well as incentives or promotions.
Why hospitals are looking to architects to minimize length of stay
Hospitals and health systems in the U.S. are increasingly examining the design and aesthetic of their facility to appeal to patients and potentially shorten inpatient stays, according to a CNN report.
The approach, known as evidence-based design, compels architectural designers and hospital officials to contemplate "the tiniest of details," like minimizing the distance between the nurses' station and patient rooms, perfecting acoustics and selecting hardware to improve infection control, according to the report
Brightly Colored Alcoves for Nemours Children's Health System
Nemours Children’s Health System not only serves the usual inpatient population, but also serves outpatient visitors in their 65,000 square foot facility. Due to their large campus and the vast array of clinical services offered, consistency was important. Also on the top of their list was an inherent healing component. The building was purposely placed beside a forest and wetland and their team wished to bring that therapeutic feeling inside their walls, as well.
Designing hospitals for the millennial generation
The millennial generation is all grown up. The youngest millennials are heading into their 20s, the oldest are in their mid-30s. Individuals in this demographic, which has overtaken the baby boomers as the largest age cohort in the U.S., not only are making decisions about their own health care, they are driving care decisions for their children and parents.
CARING FOR CAREGIVERS
many healthcare organizations are increasingly focused on designing amenities, policies and workplaces to better support their clinicians, health providers and administrators. Interestingly, healthcare facilities — academic medical centers in particular — are wrestling with similar issues as corporate workplaces. Both seek to increase productivity, collaboration and work-life balance, and an improved workplace environment can help facilitate these goals.
Surround Supports Family’s Involvement in Care
We believe change can come from enriching the moments that matter most. Moments in a hospital room are meaningful, personal and pivotal for everyone involved. We know many family members want to support their loved one in every way possible. We know many doctors and nurses value the care, concern and help family members can provide.

DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE: KEEPING THE CONVERSATION GOING
Over the last two decades, a well-documented body of knowledge has begun to propel the discussion of design within healthcare environments as an influential factor aiding the healing process. The philosophies discussed covered a wide spectrum from lean design as a design-thinking approach to inform and influence organizational and operational models, to approaches that seek to enhance the patient experience and the humanization of what would otherwise be an institutional environment.
Why We Love Healthcare Construction and Design (And You Should Too!)
Over the past decade we've seen dramatic changes in healthcare construction in terms of demands and delivery. This extends to cost factors and green building requirements, which are having a profound and exciting impact on the development of healthcare facilities. Changes are often difficult to predict so new buildings are being designed to be flexible and adaptable. It can get especially tricky with the redevelopment of existing buildings. Those responsible for redeveloping existing buidlings know it can't adversely affect air quality or have long construction timeframes.
New Health Insights: Families Face Unmet Needs
Family members support hospital patients emotionally and physically, but these important people in the healthcare process are often underutilized and undervalued. Now, new insights from Steelcase Health released today reveal how patient room design can impact family experiences and engagement in a loved one’s care, and influence patient satisfaction and outcomes.
ENHANCING THE HEALTHCARE PLANNING PROCESS THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY
Healthcare facility planning is changing as Virtual Reality enables clients/users/owners to step into the planning process as never before. High-tech buzzwords – Revit, Cloud, Mobile Apps, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality – are becoming the transformative tools of the trade. Virtual mock-ups viewed through headsets/glasses have enhanced the planning and design process, leading to better collaboration with user teams and improving project delivery.
How The Affordable Care Act Is Transforming Health Care Design
President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act seven years ago last week. Since then, providers have slowly changed their approach in a response to the law’s provisions, which emphasize a holistic approach to medicine, preventative measures, and bringing services to more people. It’s unclear if the ACA will endure, despite the high-profile failure of the Trump administration’s first major legislative action to repeal and replace the law. But some of its longer-term benefits are beginning to come into focus, as the first crop of hospitals and clinics to be built since the ACA’s approval are now coming on line.
Writing a Sleeper Sofa Review While Waiting for Your Wife to Give Birth
Designer's Curse takes many forms: We are the folks crawling around underneath a display table in a store to see how it's put together, embarrassing our spouse; straining to peek behind something to see how it's mounted to the wall while the museum guard watches you like a hawk; opening a door, then stopping and crouching down because the knob is somehow fascinating and you need to give it a close inspection.
