 The contract interiors realm is in a state of flux. Project management was once a major function of architecture and design firms, but it is now largely handled by corporate real estate firms. In recent years, corporate real estate firms such as CBRE and JLL have also hired workplace strategists – typically employed by architecture and design firms – to consult with their clients on better ways to maximize the effectiveness of their real estate investments. Now, with the creation of a furniture advisory team in the Chicago market, CBRE is leading the industry in a brand new concept to bring transparency to the furniture buying component, and it is delivering big results for its clients. With furniture making up the second largest spend in a renovation project, CBRE identified a need to educate clients on the “how to buy” rather than the “what to buy.”

Florence Knoll Bassett was Knoll’s universal arbiter of taste. According to Murray Rothenberg, an early Knoll designer who worked directly for Shu, as Florence (neé Schust) was known by her co-workers, “Everything was controlled by Mrs. Knoll, everything that the public saw—letterhead, business cards, stationery, graphics—it doesn’t matter. She saw it, she approved it.” Until Robert Cadwallader’s appointment as Director of Marketing in 1967, the company’s marketing department was, essentially, a one-woman show.

DIRTT Announces Record Results for Q3 2015

Revenue increased by $15.4 million, or 33.1%, for the three months ended September 30, 2015 compared with the same period in 2014. Revenue increased by $42.3 million, or 32.7%, for the nine months ended September 30, 2015 compared with the same period in 2014. The increase in revenue was the result of continued momentum throughout North American markets, as well as the strengthening US dollar.

Kimball International, Inc. Reports Strong First Quarter Results

Kimball International, Inc. Tuesday announced first quarter fiscal year 2016 net sales of $156.6 million and income from continuing operations of $5.6 million, or $0.15 per diluted share.

Net sales in the first quarter of fiscal year 2016 increased 8% from the prior year first quarter, driven by increases in all vertical markets except the commercial vertical which was approximately flat. The majority of the sales increase was in the hospitality vertical which increased 34% over the prior year, driven by an increase in new hotel construction and renovations. The commercial, government, healthcare, education, and finance verticals increased in total 3% over prior year in part driven by marketing promotions and new product introductions tailored to specific verticals.

Perkins+Will has announced the opening of a major new showroom for Haworth, Inc., its longstanding client, in downtown Los Angeles. The project is both a fresh new design and the first showroom in North America ever designed to the WELL Building Standard. The completed project also marks three decades of collaboration between the two companies, a relationship that began in Chicago in 1984 and includes the design of Haworth’s headquarters, as well as its showrooms around the world.

Presented during designblok 15 — prague’s annual design and fashion week — the vitra hub is a experimental installation completed by students of the city’s academy of arts, architecture and design (AAAD). responding to the event’s overarching theme of ‘freedom’, the hub functions as a creative outpost, encouraging public participation and reappropriation. the work incorporates two major pieces by renowned german designer konstantin grcic: ‘hack’, a flexible table system that seeks to anticipate the changing requirements of both companies and employees, and ‘allstar’, a chair that seeks to defy typical office stereotypes.
