When it comes to workplace wellness programmes it appears that even if you build them, employees may still not come. According to a study conducted by the American Psychological Association, around two-thirds of Americans do not take regular advantage of the wellness programmes created for them by their employers. More than half (56 percent) of the 1,500 people surveyed say their employer’s culture does not support their wellbeing and a third believe they are ‘chronically stressed’ at work. The report suggests that the problems associated with this could be alleviated with more support from the employer. Nearly three quarters (73 percent) of employees with managers who show support through involvement and commitment to wellbeing initiatives said their organisation helps them to develop a healthy lifestyle, compared with just 11 percent who work in an organisation without that leadership support.
