Design Within Reach Doubles Down with its New Space in the Nation's Capital

Design Within Reach has opened a beautiful new Studio in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., just a few doors away from its previous home on M Street. The new Georgetown Studio presents the largest stage for authentic modern design in the Metro DC area and local shoppers can expect to see DWR shopping bags popping up on the arms of clientele since the location will be home to the first-ever in-Studio Chilewich shop.

DWR is the largest retailer of authentic modern furniture and accessories in the world, and at nearly 11,000 square feet, the new Studio introduces innovative ways to experience the company's extensive product assortment. Among the innovations, the signature DWR Swatch Wall – a spectrum of material and color represented by hundreds of wall-mounted upholstery tiles – offers a glimpse of the more than 3,000 custom options available on most upholstered furniture, while a double-height Light Cloud composed of nearly 100 pendant lights from the DWR assortment billows in the atrium and engages the customers' imaginations.

"Washington D.C. is an incredibly international city, home to world travelers and discerning clientele," says DWR CEO John Edelman. "With the new Studio, we have the opportunity to give these design fans more authentic modern design than ever seen before in the nation's capital."

Customers will discover 20 fully-realized room vignettes – living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms – that integrate iconic classics of modern furniture with DWR's exclusive collections and the work of designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Norm Architects, Matthew Hilton, George Nelson and Jens Risom. Large areas of the Studio are dedicated to DWR's outdoor collections for lounge and dining, including sunshades and lifestyle accessories, as well as an extensive assortment of task chairs for work or the home office.

The most notable hallmark is the Chilewich shop, a unique space within the Studio offering woven floor mats, colorful table placemats, complementary table runners and linen dinner napkins by designer Sandy Chilewich, a longtime partner of DWR.

"The Chilewich shop is an extension of the DWR retail experience," says DWR President John McPhee. "Sandy is a valued partner of DWR, so it's really a very exciting venture for both of us and our customers."

In Georgetown, the company continued its work with New York-based architecture firm DFA and lighting designer Light Studio LA.

The DWR Georgetown Studio is at 3338 M St. NW, Washington, DC 20007. The Studio can be reached at 202.339.9480 from 10am–7pm Monday–Friday, 10am–6pm Saturday and 11am–6pm Sunday.
