Often regarded as the Social Media Generation, it turns out that an even more apt descriptor of the Millennial Generation is simply, the Social Generation. Millennials, whether online or off, place a premium on opportunities for social interaction in just about every phase of their daily lives, including dining. So much so, in fact, that a recent report from the Commerce Department shows that the Millennial Generation’s interest in dining out resulted in sales at restaurants and bars outpacing spending at grocery stores.
When designing dining spaces at restaurants, colleges, and yes, even grocery stores, here are a few considerations for selecting furniture that supports Millennials’ desire to make eating out a highly-social experience. To encourage people to sit together and talk—whether a small gathering or large party—banquet seating is an ideal solution because it easily scales up and down based on group size. For a more relaxing environment, soft seating is a good option, especially when paired with TV monitors and similar amenities.
In all cases, standing height tables and chairs are a good option. These “eye-height” pieces make it easy for people to join a group and participate in a conversation. And because Millennials still love to go online even when they’re together in person, the dining space must provide easy access to power, with outlets often integrated with the furniture, and wireless technology throughout the facility.
Dining spaces that offer informal, collaborative environments that make it easy to socialize in person and onscreen stand to win the stomachs, hearts and wallets of the Millennial Generation.
