Yves Behar, Amir Mortazavi and Steve Mohebi announced the expansion of CANOPY, exceptional shared workspace for accomplished professionals and entrepreneurs. Following the success of CANOPY Pacific Heights, the team will open a second location in April 2018 in San Francisco’s historic North Beach/Jackson Square neighborhood. CANOPY Jackson Square will deliver impeccable contemporary design, a sophisticated and diverse community, and a serene, distraction-free environment for up to 250 members to concentrate, connect and do their best work.
CANOPY will uniquely feature a 1,500-square-foot outdoor terrace with breathtaking views of San Francisco for year-round outside work and socializing, as well as 11,000 square feet of premium, Class-A coworking space inside. Boasting a considerate and generous layout, CANOPY will afford members ample spaciousness that is lacking in other, often cramped, collaborative workspaces. In response to overwhelming demand, CANOPY will offer 23 private, sound-proof offices equipped with Herman Miller Sit-to-Stand Desks for one to 16 people each – ideal for the evolving needs of established boutique companies and emerging start-ups – in addition to shared workspaces and private desks for freelancers and nomadic workers.
“CANOPY Jackson Square is designed to combine spacious private work spaces with thoughtful social lounges for collaboration” said Yves Behar, internationally acclaimed designer and CANOPY co-founder. “The design intent is to add a striking new idea for what work is within the North Beach iconic neighborhood. The triangular floorplan has private linear office on two sides, with a central organic lounge space that functions as a social forest canopy made of a vertical and overhead fanning geometry and organic seating.”
CANOPY’s second location is on the corner of the City’s famed Columbus Street and Pacific Avenue. Historically and culturally rich as the epicenter of everything from the Gold Rush to the Beat Generation, North Beach / Jackson Square maintains its classic architecture and cultural cafés and bookstores, while today representing San Francisco’s best culinary, design, arts and fashion scene as home to Quince, Tosca, Cotogna, William Stout, BIX Restaurant, City Lights bookstore, Reveille Coffee, Isabel Marant, PIA The Store, Shinola, A.P.C., and Aesop, among many others. Built from the ground up by Amir Mortazavi of M-PROJECTS, and custom designed by friends Yves Behar and Amir Mortazavi, CANOPY will exemplify the new Jackson Square and pioneering spirit of San Francisco.
Combining contemporary architecture, local materials and cutting-edge technologies, CANOPY is the most advanced and yet intimate place of work. The space will merge the latest in contemporary office furnishings from Herman Miller (Sayl chairs, Public Office Landscape desk system designed by Yves Behar, Chadwick Modular Seating, Renew Sit-to-Stand desks, Eames Eiffel and Molded Plywood Chairs) with vintage lights by Preben Dahl and custom-made furniture designed by Behar and Mortazavi. There will be porcelain tiles in intricate patterns designed by the Bouroullec brothers and Barber and Osgerby for Mutina as well as Formafantasma for Cedit Ceramiche. The sound proof aluminum and glass partitions are by Modernus and are fitted with smart locks by August.
A semi-enclosed awning canopy comprised of structural fanning trees will live within the generous space to provide an intimate environment, filtering light and noise the expressive canopy – which will extend to a coffee shop – will act like a living room, affording members a sense of comfort and belonging. Outside, an expansive terrace with views of San Francisco’s downtown skyline, including the landmark Transamerica Pyramid and Francis Ford Coppola’s Sentinel Building, will be partially covered and heated for year-round use.
“Over the past year, CANOPY has attracted a dynamic community that feels a genuine affinity for one another and has made us a special part of their personal brands,” said Mortazavi. “We look forward to building upon this community and welcoming an equally diverse set of creators, thinkers, builders and innovators to CANOPY Jackson Square.”
CANOPY members enjoy access to a rich events program featuring panel discussions, cultural mixers, book signings, tastings, and design, fashion and consumer product pop-ups. CANOPY’s cultural calendar has included trunk shows with Cuyana and Shinola, the gathering of influential leaders in sustainable design for a panel discussion led by Amour Vert, events featuring members’ own businesses, and female-focused events with Six Degrees Society for a panel on infertility as well as Women, Wine, and Wisdom, which hosted a women-only book talk by author Kim Scott.
Mortazavi continued, “We continue to see strong demand for our premium memberships from a diverse blend of industries, particularly from female founders and executives who appreciate our gender balanced community. We are excited to continue to meet the unmet needs of these accomplished and aspirational professionals in our upcoming wave of growth.”
