Herman Miller once again called upon Berlin-based Studio 7.5 to design their latest, and perhaps most important new task chair in a decade.
Cosm (pronounced koz'um), which Herman Miller launched today during iSalone in Milan, is a whole new family of mesh chairs. The company says it is the first that adjusts to users instantly through high-tech materials and a unique shape.
It appears that Cosm is being presented as a broad new portfolio of seating, and arguably the most important new seating line from Herman Miller since Embody was launched 10 years ago.
From a design standpoint, Cosm appears to build on the continuous contour shape in Herman Miller's Setu chair and the “torsonal flex” found in Setu and Mirra. In Cosm, Miller is calling it “auto-harmonic tilt.” Basically the frame of the chair flexes with the movement of the user by having the frame of the chair translates vertical force to horizontal force using a set of small gears built into the frame of the chair. This adjustment happens without the user doing a thing.
Herman Miller says that Cosm represents a culmination of two decades of engineering and design research with Herman Miller.
No doubt Cosm will take up a prominent portion of Herman Miller's showroom at NeoCon, and is expected to be available mid-summer through Herman Miller's dealer network.
