U.S. Business Interiors acquired by dancker

New Jersey based office furniture dealer dancker has acquired Capitol Heights, MD-based U.S. Business Interiors, expanding dancker's presence in the Greater Washington market.

The acquisition, effective immediately, includes the takeover of USBI's headquarters, and all of USBI's roughly 60 employees will be added to the dancker staff. Dancker will also take over USBI's showroom on South Charles Street in Baltimore.

While dancker President and CEO Steve Lang did not disclose terms of the deal, he said dancker acquired all of USBI's assets, which are valued at between $40 and $50 million. He said dancker is valued at around $150 million.

An integration team from dancker is currently on location in Capitol Heights for three months to help with the transition. The company is hiring a senior-level executive to help with growth strategy in the market.

Lang said a robust economy is creating opportunities for buying, selling or consolidating among furniture distributors and manufacturers. He said dancker is attempting to be on the front end of the consolidation trend with the acquisition.

"The industry is in a bit of a renaissance," Lang said in an interview. "If we could make a splash in the Baltimore-Washington metro area, we can expand our client base throughout the rest of the country."

In 2016, USBI ranked 10th among Greater Washington furniture dealers with $19.21 million in regional sales, according to Washington Business Journal research.

By targeting corporate headquarters and offices in the region, Lang said dancker hopes to move from the top 10 to top 5 percent in terms of size of distributors in the industry.
