Facilitating Informative Discussions with Clients

Facilitating Informative Discussions with Clients

One of the most significant aspects of a successful project is understanding precisely what the client wants; and that isn’t always an easy task. As design professionals, we live and breathe the ins and outs of interior design every day—however most of our clients don’t. When it’s not part of daily language, one should not expect a client to express exactly what they want if they don’t know what to ask for!

Throughout our design education, we were taught to present, sell, and communicate our ideas, as we do in the professional world. It’s in our blood to fight to the death to make sure our design ideas are made into a reality for each project…ok, it’s not that extreme. But we do possess a determined and passionate mindset for the work we do! Explanation is essential in relaying the specific value of design, yet designers can sometimes get caught up in this part of the process and fail to place equal emphasis on listening. Listening is key when it comes to our ability to create a space that truly meets the client’s needs.

Gensler is the highest-earning architecture firm in the U.S.

Gensler is the highest-earning architecture firm in the U.S.

Gensler clinched the number one spot for the fifth consecutive year in this year’s edition of the annual Top 300 Architecture Firms list, which is out now from Architectural Record. The list ranks U.S. companies based on revenue for architectural services performed in 2015, breaking out total architecture revenue, how much of that was domestic and international, percent of design revenue from architecture, and total design revenue in millions of dollars.

Gensler, which is based in San Francisco and is responsible for buildings including the Shanghai Tower, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Airbnb’s San Francisco office, as well as the world’s first 3D-printed office, was the first firm to surpass $1 billion in revenue in 2014. Last year, Gensler increased that total revenue by over $100 million, bringing in a sky-high $1,181,030,000.

The Dark Side Of Your Design Heroes

The Dark Side Of Your Design Heroes

We admire many midcentury heroes for their work, whether they created products that improve our lives, buildings that beautified our skylines, or furniture that made our homes more enjoyable. Yet in more than a few cases, some of the most famous names of the 20th century also supported questionable—sometimes, downright awful—ideas and organizations during their careers. Designers are human, after all.

2 MINUTE READ Beyond The Whiteboard: Rethinking How Business Schools Teach Design

2 MINUTE READ Beyond The Whiteboard: Rethinking How Business Schools Teach Design

"Design thinking" has become the watchword for an entire generation of MBAs who think that becoming the next Steve Jobs is as easy as a whiteboard filled with disruptive ideation. "This broad definition of design thinking [practiced at many businesses] is a single-faceted cliché of what design really is, and how it can contribute to business," says Pentagram partner Michael Bierut.

VOA’s New York office

VOA’s New York office

How INARCH became VOA New York.  We started INARCH in 1997 with just two people. It was a test to see if I could actually run a business on my own with a couple of clients that were willing to take the leap and work with me, though they had worked with me for a long time. It was my first foray into that.

An Award Trifecta in Atlanta with IIDA Georgia

It’s has been said that good things come in threes. IA's Atlanta office design team learned that firsthand on February 25, at the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Georgia Chapter’s 2016 b.o.b. Awards. IA was recognized with awards for large and small corporate projects for digital creative agency, SapientNitro, in Miami and Santa Monica, California. And at the end of the evening, the small corporate project also garnered the 2016 b.o.b. Award, the equivalent of the design competition’s “Best in Show.”

2016 Top 100 Interior Giants Research: Firms and Fees

Flash back five years, when fees stood at $2.2 billion (remember, they are now at $3.5 billion). Since then, business on a pure dollar basis has expanded 59 percent—a heck of a run in any industry. Another interesting stat: Firms are getting more out of their designers than ever before, as fees per employee topped $300,000 for the first time, up 15 percent. (Staffers report that 80 percent of their time was billed to clients.) Sweet numbers, indeed.

Digital Transformation Requires Total Organizational Commitment

Digital Transformation Requires Total Organizational Commitment

By now you’ve surely heard that moving forward, every company will be a software company, and that shift is happening now as companies large and small scramble to transform into digitally-driven organizations. Wherever you turn, businesses are facing tremendous disruptive pressure. Archinect's Guide to Presentations, Part I: The Visuals

Archinect's Guide to Presentations, Part I: The Visuals

It’s 4:30 in the morning, and you are just heading to bed after polishing your latest project. The client meeting starts in three hours and you have yet to go home, change, and come back to whip up a quick presentation. What you don’t realize in the wee hours of the day is that excellent design will get you nowhere without a compelling presentation. How do we convey our façade intention to a client who has never heard of a detailed wall section? How do we convince government officials to allow the development of air rights above a listed building? How do we demonstrate to our future employer that we are the candidate of their dreams?

7 Tips to Help You Build Trust With Your Client

7 Tips to Help You Build Trust With Your Client

There is a lot of discussion about the architect-client relationship circling the profession right now: about which clients architects ought to be prepared to turn down, or about the power developers have over the architects they employ. Often forgotten in these discussions is the fact that the key to making good architecture is for the architect to stick to their vision, and - crucially - to have their client's trust to do so. In this article, originally published on Autodesk's Line//Shape//Space publication as "7 Tips to Build and Maintain Trust in an Architect-Client Relationship," Taz Loomans offers 7 ways that architects can create this trusting relationship.
