The First 100% Recyclable Carpets Are Here
Lately, there’s been a lot of momentum around devising sustainable alternatives for things that we tend to take for granted. A Swedish grocery chain is swapping out plastic fruit labels for laser marks; a brewery switched out its plastic six-pack rings for edible versions to protect ocean wildlife.
But until now, no one has made a dent in the problem of household carpeting. Second only to diapers when it comes to taking up landfill space, around 3.5 billion pounds of carpet are tossed each year in the U.S. Because carpets are made up of such a complex array of chemicals, like latex and PVC, they’re next to impossible to recycle.

Interface Reports Third Quarter 2016 Results
"For the first time in the past year and a half, our quarterly orders were positive versus the prior year period. Importantly, we also saw increasing order strength over the quarter from July through September. Net sales in the first half of the year were down nearly 6%, and the third quarter saw a slight improvement with sales down only 2.5%. With our order trends, we expect to deliver positive sales growth in the fourth quarter."
LEADING LEED MATERIAL TRANSPARENCY: MILLIKEN PILOTS A NEW CREDIT
Green building today encompasses a myriad of product certifications, building standards and manufacturing processes. Transparency tools range in focus, from environmental impacts to potential risks to human health – and it is no surprise either. People spend more than 90% of their time inside, where the EPA estimates that pollutants are between two and five times higher than those outdoors.
Building material transparency is no longer a bonus when comparing finishes for commercial interior environments such as flooring – it is mandatory. This movement is something that Philip Ivey, sustainability leader for Milliken, understands at its essence.

Interface results: Second quarter sales in Americas business declined 6.0%
Sales in the Company's core U.S. modular carpet business were up 1% in the quarter, but this was more than offset by a decline in its InterfaceServices business due to large retail projects that were delayed until the second half of the year, coupled with soft business conditions in Canada and Brazil as a result of the weakened oil and gas sector.
4 WAYS TO IMPROVE CLASSROOM ACOUSTICS
The relationship between noise levels and academic performance is well documented – so much so that it’s recognized by LEED building certifications. Schools can earn points for classrooms with sound levels below 40dB, which are then used to qualify the school for different levels of certification, and in some instances, financial grants.
But in many classrooms, sound levels average 65dB (Oberdorster and Tiesler, 2005), which can make a big difference to students’ engagement with their learning, and in turn their academic performance. So today I’m looking at 4 ways you can improve classroom acoustics.
