Sustainable supply chains: The new information highway

Sustainable supply chains: The new information highway

We see it time and again: Large, publicly traded multinational develops and implements a sustainability program; measures, manages and discloses its sustainability performance publicly for all stakeholders; recognizes the impacts, risks and opportunities in its supply chain; implements a supplier sustainability program and seeks some level of disclosure from suppliers, a step that affects both publicly traded and privately held suppliers.

An Open-Plan Office Can Cut Your Emissions

An Open-Plan Office Can Cut Your Emissions

Visualize greenhouse gas emissions. A roadway congested with cars and trucks might be the first image that comes to mind. That’s close, but not quite right. The buildings on the side of the road are actually the bigger polluters. The building sector of the U.S. economy uses more energy and emits more greenhouse gases than any other. Buildings account for 39 percent of energy use and 38 percent of carbon emissions nationwide. Written by Dick Resch, CEO of KI.

WHY THERE’S MORE TO SUSTAINABLE FLOORING THAN RECYCLED CONTENT

WHY THERE’S MORE TO SUSTAINABLE FLOORING THAN RECYCLED CONTENT

When most flooring manufacturers talk about sustainability, they focus on what happens to their flooring at the end of its life. This means your flooring purchase becomes shaped in terms of what will happen to your carpet when you’ve finished using it, rather than the use you’ll get from it during its lifetime.more. Sustainability concerns become tied up with the percentage of recycled content in different flooring types, but this is only one aspect of sustainability.

Interface steps up carpet recycling

Interface steps up carpet recycling

Over the past two decades, commercial carpet maker Interface has become so efficient at recycling that its factories are hungry for a larger supply of old, modular tiles being discarded in construction and renovation projects.

Rather than building its own resources to collect more, however, Interface is partnering with a network of regional suppliers that will gather carpet on its behalf. Its first alliance is with an Oakland, California-based company called Rethink Green, which to date has recycled more than 10,000 tons of carpet since it was founded in 2011.

Illinois leads among all U.S. states for the third consecutive year; LEED momentum grows on the West Coast.

The Man Behind A $3 Billion Industry: Environmental Practices Can Be Profitable

The Man Behind A $3 Billion Industry: Environmental Practices Can Be Profitable

Can big companies be profitable and environmentally-conscious?  Yes.  Not only can they be mindful of the environment, they can actually benefit (as in cut costs and profit) by thinking about the planet as much as their bottom line.

That’s what Rick Fedrizzi, the man who helped make LEED certification for buildings, argues in his new book, Greenthink.

The Real Reason We Should Be Thinking About Sustainability

The Real Reason We Should Be Thinking About Sustainability

“Sustainability” and “innovation” are two broad marketing terms used in conjunction so often that they’ve become almost meaningless. Projects Aim for Zero-Net-Energy Sustainability

Projects Aim for Zero-Net-Energy Sustainability

Two projects in the southern part of the Bay Area could serve as the new baseline for environmentally sustainable buildings. In Mountain View, AP+I Design employees might feel a little tipsy as they relax in the lounge of their new digs on Easy Street. That’s because they’ll be sitting on a bench curving its way around a rotund wall constructed out of wine-barrel staves. Specifically, the side of the staves that made the barrel interior was used, so the wall retains the deep, dark red stain left by volumes of wine.
