Knoll Posts 9.7% Gain in Quarterly Sales

"Net sales were $294.7 million for the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 9.7%, from the second quarter of 2015. Net sales for the Office segment were $179.3 million during the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 11.4%. The increase in the Office segment was led by continued growth in our core systems portfolio, as well as increases in complementary products."

Cherryman to relocate regional center from Indiana to Aurora

A Los Angeles-based office furniture manufacturer said it will move its Midwest distribution center from Indiana to Aurora, Illinois.

Cherryman Industries, which makes high-end, environmentally friendly office furniture, recently signed a lease for a 160,000-square-foot facility at 2413 Prospect Drive in Aurora, IL, according to Chicago-based commercial real estate advisory firm Newmark Grubb Knight Frank.

Italian design needs to go back to its origins, says Cappellini

Italian brands create "too many products that look the same", says Giulio Cappellini, whose furniture company is making a comeback under new owner Haworth.

"Sometimes looking into Italian design, I see too many products that look the same, even when they're produced by different companies," he said. "It is very important to work on strong products – products that can maybe be copied 80 per cent but not 100 per cent."

HNI Corporation Reports Continued Double Digit Earnings Growth For Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2016

Office Furniture sales decreased $22.5 million or 5.0 percent to $428.1 million. Sales for the quarter decreased in North America contract and International businesses partially offset by an increase in the supplies-driven channel. The acquisition and divestitures of small office furniture related companies increased sales $6.5 million compared to the prior year quarter. On an organic basis, sales decreased 6.4 percent.

After news leaked that they would be recalling up to 29 million chests and drawers in the wake of the third child death in three years, Ikea USA president Lars Petersson described the recall as "unprecedented" in the company's history. But the massive recall wasn't just unprecedented for Ikea: It marks the largest furniture safety recall in American history, according to data provided to Co.Design by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC).

In fact, looking at the top five furniture recalls in American history, it's not even close. The Ikea recall is three times bigger than the second largest recall in the CSPC's archives—and that recall was spread across an entire industry. Yet a look at the largest furniture recalls in U.S. history reveals that the last two decades have seen plenty of other large-scale recalls, if not quite as huge as Ikea's. Trigger alert: This list is likely to give new parents panic attacks.

Steelcase Reports First Quarter Results

Steelcase sales post a 1.9% year over year increase. The company reported first quarter revenue of $718.8 million and net income of $19.4 million, or diluted earnings per share of $0.16. Excluding restructuring costs, adjusted earnings were $0.18 per share.  In the prior year, Steelcase reported $705.5 million of revenue, diluted earnings of $0.16 per share and adjusted earnings of $0.17 per share.
