The Most Famous Task Chair Ever Gets A 21st-Century Update

The Most Famous Task Chair Ever Gets A 21st-Century Update

Decades ago, the symbol of executive success was a lavishly tufted leather throne. That all changed in 1994 when Herman Miller released the Aeron, a sleek, ergonomic task chair intended for CEOs and administrative staff alike. Its innovations—numerous adjustments that let the chair conform to a user, engineered textiles, and flexible support—made it an instant icon; MoMA even acquired one before it hit the market. And it's not just the design establishment that vaunted the chair. It became a pop-culture icon, appearing in a handful of shows like 30 RockThe Simpsons, and The Office. This week, Herman Miller announced a reengineering of Aeron, but when your seat is worthy enough to be God's throne, why mess with success—and how?

Nendo's Rolling Workspaces Wheel into Orgatec 2016

Nendo's Rolling Workspaces Wheel into Orgatec 2016

At the Orgatec 2016 furniture fair in Cologne, Germany (next week), nendo‘s ‘rolling workspaces’ installation for the Japanese furniture manufacturer KOKUYO, presents a move away from the square, regimented office environment. Based on the presumption that redefining the square whiteboard, which is a common fixture used in every office, will create an environment that will encourage creativity, the whiteboard was transformed into a circular shape. This allowed the board to be rolled around freely in the office, where it can be placed against the walls. Furthermore, the new form aims to promote people to write down their ideas not in a linear fashion but chained in a spiral or spread out in a radial way.

Frederick Community College is repurposing an underused 1980s-era library space into a flexible learning resource center(above) tailored to students’ and educators’ specific needs (and adaptable enough to evolve to meet future ones). Bialek Environments, a full-service provider of contract office furniture and design services, and Intellistruct, Bialek’s prefabricated construction firm, were engaged to bring Proffitt & Associates Architects' design vision to fruition, creating a collaborative environment for Frederick Community College.

FCC’s new center offers private and open study rooms, an instructional area, and a more relaxed spot for students and faculty. The center, with walls and other surfaces imbued with DIRTT technology like AV interfacing, has quickly become a favorite spot on campus, and the waiting list for the coveted group meeting spaces is a testament to the facility’s popularity and value.

Beyond Nap Pods: The Importance of Creating a Positive Company Culture

Beyond Nap Pods: The Importance of Creating a Positive Company Culture

When employees love coming to work, companies prosper. Stock returns for Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" are nearly double those of the general market. Unsurprisingly, those firms have less turnover. That's a major boost to their bottom lines, since replacing an employee can cost more than twice her salary.

‘Mad Men’ and MoMA

We have the first four floors in a building at the corner of 53rd and 54th on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. The first floor is our store. Our showroom is on the second floor, and our offices are on the other two. The area has a “Mad Men,” ’60s aesthetic. We’re around the corner from the Museum of Modern Art. Knoll has 40 or 50 pieces in the permanent collection there, so it has a lot of meaning for us related to the development of modernism.

International Company Medium Winner -- DIRTT sprouts global ties from Savannah site

Generally, the term dirtbag is not a sign of affection.

That’s not the case in Savannah since DIRTT Environmental Solutions came to town, though. DIRTTbags is what Canadian company DIRTT calls its employees, and there are now more than 100 DIRTTbags working in Savannah and throughout the state for the manufacturer of customized interiors.

DIRTT is the International Company award winner in the medium-size company category in the Governor’s International Awards sponsored by Atlanta Business Chronicle in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the World Trade Center Atlanta. This award honors a Georgia-based company engaged in international business with 100-500 employees that is showing demonstrable achievement and growth and that is actively promoting and sustaining the state’s international business environment.

Clarus Glassboards: How 2 Jobless Guys Built a $105 Million Business (in Only 5 years)

Clarus Glassboards: How 2 Jobless Guys Built a $105 Million Business (in Only 5 years)

In 2009, Robby Whites and Jeremy Rincon were laid off from their jobs as junior analysts when their employer was shut down for a fraud investigation. For some, this would have been a major setback, but Whites and Rincon seized the opportunity to create something new.

Reflecting on a recent business trip to Colombia, the duo recalled their visit to an office that used a simple sheet of glass mounted on poles as a writable surface. Having spent years in the corporate world, Whites and Rincon recognized a need for an updated, more advanced and attractive version of the 1960's messy, inefficient white boards. With an untapped potential in this market, they believed it would be groundbreaking to give people an attractive, functional alternative to write creatively on stylish walls, knowing it could easily be washed and wiped off. Following in the footsteps of the famed inventors Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the two twentysomethings headed straight into the garage at the home of Whites' parents. Clarus Glassboards, LLC was born.

Herman Miller alleges Canadian firm unlawfully sold knock-off Eames products

Herman Miller alleges Canadian firm unlawfully sold knock-off Eames products

In a new lawsuit, a West Michigan office furniture manufacturer accuses a Canadian company of producing and selling knock offs of one of the industry’s iconic designs.

Herman Miller Inc. has sued Gold Leaf Holding Ltd. of British Columbia over the company’s intentional violation of trademark law in selling, distributing and advertising several products marketed under the Eames moniker, according to court documents.

The designs of Charles and Ray Eames for decades have been a part of the Herman Miller collection, dating back to the late 1940s.

But in the lawsuit filed in August in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, the Zeeland-based Herman Miller alleges that Gold Leaf, which does business as Rove Concepts, sold “design reproductions” of six classic Eames products, including the Eames Lounge Chair, Molded Plywood Dining Chair and two version of the designers’ Office Chair.
