Recline Intervention

Recline Intervention

There’s a problem with recliners, one that starts with their rec room aesthetics and ends with the reclining mechanism itself. But as designers David Ritch and Mark Saffell of multidisciplinary 5d studio discovered when Herman Miller and Nemschoff asked them to design a brand-new healthcare recliner, making something that both the ailing and their caregivers could not only use but also enjoy was going to require truly putting the “multi” into “multidisciplinary.” Working with engineers and designers, they’ve produced Ava, a recliner that looks narrow but feels roomy, is inviting but also antibacterial, and that’s just as appealing to the people pushing the chair as the people sitting in it.

THE BENEFITS OF A COLLABORATIVE WORKPLACE

THE BENEFITS OF A COLLABORATIVE WORKPLACE

We may be preaching to the choir when we say this, but office design has a tremendous impact on how employees work. According to studies noted in our April design news post, the designed work environment has the power to encourage—or discourage—team members’ creativity, productivity, and collaboration.

Creative collaboration is more than just a business buzzword. It’s a proven business practice, with benefits for the company and for those who do the work.

Granted, developing a collaborative work environment isn’t easy—it requires well-planned communal spaces, the right furniture and tools, good organizational leadership and communication, and a shared commitment to goals.

Alvar Aalto's iconic Stool 60 gets cool-kid cred from streetwear brand Supreme

Alvar Aalto's iconic Stool 60 gets cool-kid cred from streetwear brand Supreme

Calling all hypebeasts looking to furnish your pads: This is the collaboration you didn’t know you’ve been waiting for. That’s because you never truly understood what was lacking in your lives—until now.

That missing piece would be the iconic (and much copied) Stool 60 by master Finnish designer Alvar Aalto that now features a checkerboard-patterned seat by New york cult sportswear brand (and hypebeast favorite) Supreme.

Why is this necessary, you might ask? We don’t really have an answer ourselves, but think of the three-legged piece of furniture as the ubiquitous checkered slip-on Vans sneakers, but in stool form.

The shoe’s design is timeless, but in a solid color, it could also be a little boring. Getting a pair in the checkerboard pattern, however screams cool, edgy, and so punk-rock.

Mitab presents ASCENT and COMMUNE at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2017

Designed as a modular seating, brad ascalon’s ASCENT collection for mitab is ideal for public spaces like airports and lobbies which are often intimidating, cold. As ascalon explains it, ‘the idea for this project was to rethink the notion of lobby and airport seating by establishing a completely new visual language for this category of contract furniture. airport seating in particular continues to feel cold, institutional, and ASCENT is intended to change this’. Hence, wanting to integrate a sense of versatility and flexibility, the modular furniture includes a USB port for charging and can be easily used as a table for drinks, eating, reading, or simply storing one’s personal items. Even more, given how each seat is detachable, users can customize the layout via different configurations and colors.
