The office furniture of the future actually looks pretty good

The office furniture of the future actually looks pretty good

There is a secret language to office furniture. The design, the size, the placement — they all communicate something. In most cases it's simply, "This work is sending me to sleep, please kill me."

That situation seems unfair, given that modern jobs are often anything but boring. Yes, we have open floor plans, but does the environment reflect the creativity that exists in even the most mundane jobs (looking at you, accounting)?

DIRTT Announces Record Q4 and 2016 Annual Results

Revenue increased by $13.3 million, or 20.5%, for Q4 2016 compared with Q4 2015. This increase was achieved despite continued challenges in the energy sector, previously our largest industry segment, which declined as a percentage of revenue from 7% in 2015 to only 2% in the current period. This decrease was more than offset by a general increase in activity from small and medium-sized projects across a diverse range of industry segments including healthcare, which increased from 12% in Q4 2015 to 16% of revenue in Q4 2016; and government, which increased from 3% in Q4 2015 to 12% of revenue in Q4 2016.

Jim Keane on the Future of Work with Microsoft

Jim Keane on the Future of Work with Microsoft

Growth and innovation are top of mind issues when I speak with business leaders around the world. One of those conversations included Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella. Three years ago, we were both new to our roles and facing a similar challenge: shifting priorities from efficiency to growth. This kind of change not only requires a reallocation of resources — it necessitates a change in culture and a new way of leading. At my first meeting with our management, I quoted Satya challenging Microsoft to recognize innovation and foster its growth. I thought his words reflected a unique perspective on the emergent nature of true innovation and the evolving role of leadership to fuel creativity.

When Satya and I later talked, we recognized the customers we served were facing the same hurdles around innovation and creativity. So, we asked our teams to think about how our companies could work together to be more helpful to those facing this challenge.

Big Screen Benefits: Why You Need Art at Work

Big Screen Benefits: Why You Need Art at Work

When you go see a movie, you’re going to get an all-consuming, immersive experience. The screen is generally five to eight stories high. The colors are vibrant. The story takes you places. Your brain gets to take a break from the real world and science tells us that’s a good thing. By giving our brains a break, we improve focus, sharpness and motivation. After all, if art in the theater is important enough to deserve a televised awards gala, why not put more emphasis on it to support creativity in the workplace? Creativity isn’t just for movie stars and screenwriters. We face global issues that require us all to unleash our creative potential to solve problems and generate ideas.
