Why an Airbnb Co-Founder Just Launched a Line of Office Furniture

As Airbnb grew from a tiny startup to the $2.8 billion behemoth it is today, it outgrew four headquarters in nine years. That meant a lot of rearranging and redecorating.

That experience was one of the reasons why Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia was inspired to launch his own line of furniture designed for changing workplaces. The modular line, from Bernhardt Design, can be reconfigured easily based on a company's needs.

Ford's new CEO pioneered design thinking at Steelcase

A Ford exec with a design background and who launched its Chariot microtransit system and Motivate bike share program has just been named the automaker’s CEO. Not only does this give Ford a competitive edge over traditional car companies, which have been scrambling to acquire tech startups in the race to autonomy, it shows that Ford is fully committed to its vision of shared, autonomous mobility that may not even include personal cars.

On, the young, successful running shoe brand, keeps employees on their toes in the company's new headquarters in Zurich: while working environments usually seek to shorten paths, the On team moves around along a central aisle in an office space of over 100 metres. There are no partitions or attributed workspaces. Employees clock up a total distance of two to three kilometres daily in a setting that promotes intercommunication unlike any conventional office layout. This dynamic environment thrives on emotions and calls for a sense of comfort and well-being – for sofas which are at home in offices and office chairs that are also perfect for the home office. Cross-functionality is part and parcel of Vitra's comprehensive product portfolio, which is why the On office is furnished entirely with Vitra furniture.

WATCH: Casper Cloaking Technology: Privacy + Transparency

There’s a tension in many workplaces today. Organizations want transparent, collaborative environments. Leaders want to be visible stewards of their company culture. But, there are times when information just has to stay private. Large-scale monitor displays help teams work together. But, glass walled meeting rooms could display sensitive data to people passing nearby. Is the only solution to pull blinds and shut doors? We don’t think so.

Casper Cloaking Technology by Designtex solves this problem using architectural film for glass walls that only blocks people’s ability to see what’s on a digital screen inside the room. People walking by can see faces and gestures, but can’t see content displayed on any LED or LCD screen inside.

DIRTT Announces Award of Significant Contract

DIRTT Announces Award of Significant Contract

DIRTT Environmental Solutions (DRT.TO) announced Tuesday it has been awarded a significant contract from a large international company, for interior construction projects in multiple locations. Details on the amount of work to be completed at each location are dependent on final design specifications, creating the potential for this first phase to exceed the US$5 million contract value and develop into a longer-term partnership between DIRTT and that company.

"DIRTT's ability to build custom, flexible and beautiful spaces rapidly and with cost certainty were key factors in securing this partnership," says Mogens Smed, CEO of DIRTT. "DIRTT's commitment to challenging the conventional construction norms of environmentally-damaging materials, excess waste and project delays were also a significant factor."

The name of the international company was not provided.

GMi Evolves

GMi Evolves

Deep in the research and development department of GMi is a rock you can use as a dry erase board. A bunch of fall leaves covered in a material that makes them dry erasable is also there. No, this company with a long history based in Lebanon, Ohio, is not marketing a “natural” collection of dry erase products. But it is pushing the outer limits to see what's possible when it comes to visual communication.

The company, founded as Ghent Manufacturing in 1976, is not afraid of taking chances, pushing what's possible and doing whatever it can to help its customers.

From Custom to Construction, OFGO Goes the Extra Mile

From Custom to Construction, OFGO Goes the Extra Mile

In 1980, the rock band Journey released the song “Anyway You Want It,” the same year Canadian office furniture maker OFGO was founded. Though the songwriters Steve Perry and Neal Schon did not consult the fledgling office furniture maker about the lyrics, the sentiment behind the song fits perfectly with OFGO's drive toward giving its customers the ability to customize their products — anyway they want it.

And that, perhaps more than anything, sets OFGO apart from the competition, though that's not all. The Toronto-area furniture maker embraces research and design, believes in building its own furniture in its own high-tech plant and wants to continue its evolution into a brand known throughout North America and beyond.
