A Status Chair For People Who Are Too Cool For Status Chairs

A Status Chair For People Who Are Too Cool For Status Chairs

British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have masterminded everything from commuter rail cars and the 2012 London Olympic torch to installations for Sony and sofas for Knoll. But one thing that the studio– which has been around for over 20 years–hasn’t produced? An office chair.

About four years ago, the Switzerland-based furniture manufacturer Vitra approached Barber Osgerby with a challenge: Design the next-generation of task chairs. “It sounds really boring when you say it like that–‘Oh my god, another office chair!’–but for industrial designers and furniture designers, it’s really the ultimate challenge,” Osgerby tells Co.Design.

Barber Osgerby’s answer was the Pacific chair, an ergonomic, technical office chair masquerading as a lounge chair, which will make its debut at NeoCon–the commercial furniture industry’s Super Bowl–in June.

Design Experience that Matters: How to Build a Z-Rack Whiteboard and Save $150

Design Experience that Matters: How to Build a Z-Rack Whiteboard and Save $150

Every design studio goes through mountains of post-it notes while brainstorming and charting ideas. We love the portability of flip-chart posters, but even after moving to a big studio in Salem we never had enough wall space.

Then we found Make Space by Scott Doorley and Scott Witthoft at the Stanford's d-school. Their design for a DIY whiteboard made from a garment z-rack was perfect: the wheels meant we could park them anywhere in the studio, and the bases nest together to reduce clutter. Building them ourselves saved money, which is great because we're a cheapskate nonprofit and we wanted ten of them.

Alegre Design Unveils KLC Chair

Alegre Design Unveils KLC Chair

Alegre Design recently unveiled KLC, a multi-purpose and versatile chair created for the Italian brand OMP Group. "This design represents a new product philosophy in which, by means of an industrial process that has been optimised to the maximum, different chairs are produced from a single pattern," explained Marcelo Alegre, the designer together with Andrés Baldoví at Alegre Design studio. "As such, it is a product that we might come across in any day-to-day setting, thanks to its integration and simplicity, as the same chair could be used as a seat in schools, homes or restaurants. It is the components that change."

Florence Knoll's 100th Birthday - An Interview with Ben Pardo of Knoll

Last Wednesday marked Michigan-born design and furniture icon Florence Knoll's 100th birthday. While no longer designing, she carries an incredibly important place in American design history—thanks to her thoughtful creations that were functional but sleek and stylish. Mobius Comes to Light at WantedDesign 2017

At its core, furniture serves a practical function but when designers are able to incorporate a playful aspect to it, it becomes that much more enjoyable to use. At this year’s WantedDesign show, furniture designer Louis Lim of Makingworks in collaboration with 3form debuted Mobius, an interactive bench that’s part furniture, part lighting experience that gets activated by touch.

Forces by Jill Malek x Visual Magnetics

Wall covering gurus, Visual Magnetics, are no stranger to collaborations, as they’ve worked with the likes of Visibility, Dusen Dusen, and now with Design Milk, where they’ll be a huge part of our Milk Stand Popup shop at this year’s ICFF. Now, they’ve partnered with award-winning designer Jill Malek to launch Forces, a collection of visually stunning wall coverings for the workspace.

Besides bringing colorful patterns to the walls, this collection adds a layer of functionality. The wall coverings have a central strip of Visual Magnetics’ writable dry-erase surface sandwiched between them, elevating the look of any workspace.

Why an Airbnb Co-Founder Just Launched a Line of Office Furniture

As Airbnb grew from a tiny startup to the $2.8 billion behemoth it is today, it outgrew four headquarters in nine years. That meant a lot of rearranging and redecorating.

That experience was one of the reasons why Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia was inspired to launch his own line of furniture designed for changing workplaces. The modular line, from Bernhardt Design, can be reconfigured easily based on a company's needs.

Stan Stands Out From the Standing Desk Crowd

Stan Stands Out From the Standing Desk Crowd

Standing desks tend to fall into two categories: large and expensive or cheap and makeshift (think: laptop sitting on top of a stack of books and boxes). The Stan by Twikit falls in a sweet spot in between those two, a laser-cut standing desk made in association with the user’s exact height for optimal ergonomics. Think of it like 3D printed shoes manufactured for perfect fit…but for working standing up.

This 3D-Knit Chair Is Made From A Single Piece Of Technical Fabric

3D knitting isn’t just for clothes or shoes; it’s potentially the future of furniture. Even Ikea is getting into the game. This year, Layer–a design studio based in London–is releasing the “Tent” chair for the Italian brand Moroso. It’s a seamless, 3D-knitted chair that integrates upholstery, cushions, and an armrest into a single piece of fabric–riffing, as its name suggests, on tent design.

Standing desks and the rise of 'healthy design'

Standing desks and the rise of 'healthy design'

If you’ve been inside any workplace renovated within the last few years, you’ve probably noticed that once-ubiquitous private offices are giving way to open floor plans with a variety of spatial configurations, from desk clusters to counters to lounge seating. At the same time, architects and clients are finding common ground in designing for health, embracing that the places in which we work can help or hinder our wellbeing.

In a recent TED Talk, innovator Daan Roosegaarde called creativity “the new capital.” As organizations continue to accelerate digitization, effectiveness and efficiencies are no longer enough to grow the business. Organizations are looking for ways to boost the creativity of their people to encourage innovation.

The new 20.VENTI office system conceived by 967ARCH studio, reinterprets the linear design of MDF Italia, and is meant for the new aesthetical and functional needs of working spaces.

The collection features full and empty volumes, a carefully studied combination of various finishes and the cables built into the bearing frame. The technical challenge starts from the use of a slender frame generated by a 20x20 mm profile. 20.VENTI includes both individual tables and double workstations, which can be aggregated, and a wide selection of screens and accessories.

A Modular Outdoor Furniture System Made by Stacking Components

A Modular Outdoor Furniture System Made by Stacking Components

Madrid-based ENORME Studio was inspired by the work of German machinery manufacturer Carl Schlickeysen, who developed the first machine made to produce bricks by extrusion. Using a similar idea, they developed the SCHLICKEYSEN modular furniture system that consists of modular metal supports and curved, brick-like ceramic forms that fit within them. The components can be configured to create picnic tables, benches, or even grandstands for elevated seating.
