The story behind Eero Saarinen's classic 1948 Model 70 Womb design is simple: Florence Knoll wanted a chair that felt like "basket full of pillows." While most might immediately think of fluffiness and volume, the Finnish-American furniture designer (and architect behind the architectural marvel that is the TWA Flight Terminal at JFK Airport) had a sleek and suggestive style. Saarinen created a shell shape that allowed for multiple, relaxed sitting positions, and meant that curled up comfort could be achieved without tons of cushioning--making overstuffed armchairs look clumsy and bulky in comparison.

Iron Age Office is a joint collaboration between Sean Dineen and Michael Stephens. With Stephen’s extensive experience as a 2nd generation steel fabricator and Dineen’s influential upbringing in the “steel city” (Sheffield England), the two share a passion for fabricating raw materials into beautiful, bold structures.

Can Office Furniture Predict the Next Recession?
Have you ever worked in a mind-numbing cubicle? I did when I was younger, and I hated it.
Being stuck in a cramped cubicle lit by overhead fluorescent lights, wedged between dozens of coworkers whose phone conversations and keyboard strokes—as well as bodily odors and noises—sucked a little bit of life out of me every single day.
My cubicle experience made me feel like a white-collar prisoner, and I knew this was not how I wanted to spend my professional life. I needed to either move up the company ladder or start my own business.
Compatico office furniture consolidates four plants into one to boost production
Compatico Inc., a manufacturer and assembler of office furniture, benching, panels, and other materials, recently decided to consolidate its entire operation down from four buildings to one larger facility, MiBiz.com reports. Years of growth prompted the decision, along with a desire to boost collaboration among employees. Compatico decided to purchase an 85,000 sq. ft. building from Grand Rapids-based Robert Grooters Development Co. and invest $250,000 into new capital equipment. The new building also gives Compatico the option to scale up to 110,000 sq. ft. if further expansion is needed.
Office-furniture sales suggest a recession is coming
The office furniture business is an extremely useful economic indicator. The ups and downs of this industry are not standalone indicators that you can use to time the market. They are, however, very good advance measures of overall economic health. After all, businesses only buy large amounts of office furniture—including the dreaded cubicle—when they are expanding their workforce and growing. That is why my bear market antenna started to twitch when I read the pessimistic outlooks of the largest office furniture and cubicle manufacturers in the world.

It’s Official: NeoCon is “Sold Out”
If you’ve not booked space for NeoCon at the Merchandise Mart, you are out of luck. No space is left to exhibit for the sold-out 2016 June show, according to show organizers. Blame it on a good economy, an increasingly strong show and perhaps most importantly, the reduced exhibition space at the Merchandise Mart. Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., which manages the building and runs NeoCon, decided last year it could close the eighth floor as a temporary showroom space for the event.
DWR’s dynamic duo:Edelman & McPhee
Edelman & McPhee may sound like the name of some tony New England law firm or perhaps an upscale apparel brand, but John Edelman and John McPhee are in fact a bit like the Oscar Madison and Felix Unger of the furniture industry. Through the past two decades and more, they’ve evolved as unlikely but effectively inseparable business roomies and complementary colleagues in running such firms as footwear company Sam & Libby and Edelman Leather.
FRESH DIRTT: Corgan Associates
Precision construction, superior aesthetics and easy reconfigurability all led this multinational firm to adapt DIRTT as its standard for office locations. This office area and executive wing were part of a major renovation and expansion of its international operations center, and a 50-foot-long, nine-foot-high corporate graphic printed direct to substrate features prominently. Conference rooms, team work areas, private offices and an executive area are kept bright and airy by strategically using glass surfaces. Two large team meeting areas incorporate DIRTT’s Enzo corners, and customized micro-perforated acoustic tiles behind surface-mounted monitors help manage sound levels. A mix of solid and glass walls provide variety and privacy as needed, and a custom blue back-painted glass tile band ties the entire space together.
